Context

Context

DS Core is a cloud‑based ecosystem that connects dental practices, laboratories and patients.

It offers secure storage and viewing of patient media, seamless collaboration with partners and a single portal for orders and services.

As a designer on DS Core, my mission was to simplify key workflows so that dentists and lab technicians could focus on patient care rather than dealing with technology.

Before DS Core, digital tools in dental practices were fragmented.

Onboarding required manual configuration of devices and accounts.

  1. There was no easy way to visualize practice performance across products.

  2. Ordering supplies and lab services involved phone calls, paper forms and follow‑up emails.

  3. Dentists had to juggle multiple systems to schedule patients, manage treatments and track records.

  4. Communication with labs was often done via unsecured email or phone tag.

These inefficiencies not only wasted time but also introduced compliance risks and made it harder to deliver consistent patient care.

To address these challenges, we worked with dentists, lab technicians, practice managers and engineers through an iterative, human‑centered design process.

Each feature area had its own nuances, but the overall process followed the same core steps:

  • Research & discovery – Conducted interviews and contextual inquiries in practices and labs, mapped existing workflows and identified pain points. Analysed existing DS Core documentation and regulatory requirements (e.g., HIPAA compliance)

  • Information architecture & user flows – Mapped user journeys across devices (desktop, tablet and mobile) to ensure that workflows were coherent and scalable.

  • Wireframing & prototyping – Created low‑fidelity wireframes to explore alternative solutions, then built high‑fidelity prototypes using DS Core’s design system for stakeholder reviews and usability testing.

  • Iterative testing – Tested prototypes with dentists and lab technicians to refine the flows, reduce cognitive load and ensure accessibility. Worked closely with compliance experts to make sure sensitive data was handled appropriately.

  • Collaboration & hand‑off – Collaborated with product management and engineering teams to prioritize features and ensure that the final designs were feasible. Provided design specifications, interactive prototypes and assets for development.

Ordering medical supplies used to mean endless paperwork and constant follow-ups. DSCore portal cuts through all that complexity, making it easy to find what you need, place orders accurately, and track everything from start to finish.

When a dentist needs to coordinate with a lab, time matters. We designed a messaging system that keeps those conversations secure and instant, whether it's about a rush order or clarifying treatment details—no more playing phone tag or waiting on emails.
